Mystery of Yog at Veda5 Rishikesh, Kerala & Goa
Main Objective of Yog
The word Yog exists in almost all Indian languages and common people in India use this word frequently while conversing in their lingua franca. Vedic sciences like Ayurveda and astrology also use the word Yog. When specific medicines are mixed in particular proportions, the resulting combination is called ‘Aushadhiyog’ in Ayurveda. When specific planets align in particular manner, Vedic astrology calls it ‘Grahayog’. Thus, the word Yog suggests joining, mixing, aligning or existing in unison. This is exactly what the doctrine of Yogadarshan is all about! Its main objective is to achieve harmony among body, mind & soul.
Quite often it happens that we remain seated in school while our mind wanders on the playground. Or while we physically remain present in office, mentally we are at home or elsewhere. This disharmony is so common that we get used to it. Hardly ever we bother to get rid of it. Yogadarshan invites our attention to this disharmony that constantly exists inside us and shows the pathway to come out of it. In fact, it takes the person to a completely new level of existence.
Ashtangayog
Thousands of years ago an Indian exponent Patanjali derived an eight-step methodology to harmonize body, mind & soul. Over the course of time his method assumed the name ‘Ashtangayog’. Patanjali believed that harmony among body, mind & soul can not only protect the person from many physical ailments but can also emancipate him from vicious circle of life & death. In other words, such harmony can render perfect physical, mental, social and spiritual health to the individual.
Yam & Niyam
Because the objectives of Yog are not limited to physical level, the first two steps of Yog viz. Yam & Niyam are designed to achieve mental discipline. They try to inculcate discipline in personal and social life of the individual and simultaneously train him to sustain hardships of life with neutrality & peace.
Asan
To stabilize mind, it is essential to have a stable and healthy body. Mind cannot remain peaceful and stable if body is plaguing with pains, discomfort and diseases. So, third step of Yog is Asan which aims to eliminate ill-health and establish stability in body. Because this third step is world famous, many people wrongly perceive Yog as a type of physical exercise. But this is the most erroneous impression about Yog.
Pranayam
Once body gets stabilized, the person can proceed further and try to work on mind. Yogadarshan believes that breathing and mind are tied together. Having control on breathing can in turn control the mind. Pranayam, the fourth step of Yog is therefore meant to control breath.
Regular practice of Pranayam enables the person to hold mind for short intervals of time either on breath or on some other object. This is precisely what fifth step of Yog, viz. Pratyahar aims to do.
Pratyahar
Through regular practice of Pratyahar the person develops the ability to hold mind steadily for longer period of time.
Dharana
Dharana, which is sixth step of Yog literally means to hold something steadily. Its aim is to get the capability to hold mind steadily for some period.
Dhyan
If a person can hold his mind steadily for reasonable amount of time, it constitutes meditation. The seventh step of Yog, Dhyan means meditation whose goal is to keep mind free from all kinds of thoughts & feelings and try to hold it steadily within the body.
Samadhi
Regular practice of Dhyan eliminates boundary lines between body, mind & soul as they start merging with each other. As a result, the person experiences an absolute harmony and a different level of existence. This is called Samadhi, the last step of Yog.
In this way, Yog is much more than a physical exercise. It’s a kind of lifestyle and different type of attitude towards life.
